Are you a skilled veterinarian passionate about shelter medicine and high-volume spay/neuter work? Do you want to use your surgical expertise to directly impact animal lives and reduce overpopulation.

The Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS) is seeking a Part-Time High Quality/High Volume Spay/Neuter Surgeon to support our medical operations and advance our lifesaving mission.

In this role, you will:
  • Perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries.

What You’ll Do:
Clinical Care & Medical Treatment:
  • Perform physical exams, diagnostics, and medical treatments.
  • Diagnose and treat infectious diseases, injuries, and chronic conditions.
  • Administer vaccinations, medications, and preventative care.

Surgical Responsibilities:
  • Perform spay/neuter surgeries and other procedures.
  • Ensure proper pre-op and post-op care.
  • Monitor recovery and address complications.

Shelter Medicine & Population Health:
  • Support disease prevention and outbreak response.
  • Contribute to population management decisions.
  • Ensure humane care standards across all animals.

Collaboration & Team Support:
  • Partner with veterinary staff, technicians, and animal care teams.
  • Provide guidance on medical care and animal handling.
  • Support intake, adoption, and foster placement decisions.

Documentation & Compliance:
  • Maintain accurate medical records in shelter systems.
  • Follow veterinary regulations and controlled substance protocols.
  • Ensure proper documentation and use of medications.

Humane Care & Euthanasia:
  • Perform humane euthanasia when necessary.
  • Communicate medical decisions with professionalism and compassion.

What We’re Looking For:
  • Strong surgical and medical skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Emotional resilience and professionalism.
  • Commitment to compassionate, ethical veterinary care.
  • Experience in shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter highly preferred.

Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent).
  • Active North Carolina veterinary license (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience in general practice, emergency, or shelter medicine preferred.
  • High-volume spay/neuter experience strongly desired.

Work Environment:
  • Fast-paced veterinary clinic and shelter setting.
  • Exposure to animals with varied medical and behavioral needs.
  • Physical role (lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, bending, walking).
  • May include flexible or occasional weekend scheduling.
